The library also has begun to upload some of the books online to the Pennsylvania's Electronic Library. Whitehall isn't alone.

A growing number of libraries, including Parkland Community Library, Northampton Area Public Library and the Allentown Public Library, either have or are in the process of digitizing their collections using a service based in Oklahoma. For librarians, the move makes perfect sense.

In the age of Facebook and Instagram, high school yearbooks remain hugely popular. Librarians say the yearbooks are pulled by those diving into genealogical research or just looking to reminisce.

But since libraries often only own a single copy of each year, directors worry about wear and tear as well as the threat of vandalism should a visitor decide to lift a favorite photo or page.

Those concerns vanish with electronic copies. For local libraries, there's no better price for the job than the one offered by Oklahoma Correctional Industries, a company that uses inmate labor to do reconstructive work. When Whitehall Township Library Director Patty Vahey was in charge of a library in Indiana, she used the service to salvage yearbooks there.

So when she discovered the treasure trove of books at Whitehall, Vahey said she knew exactly where to turn. In Whitehall, every yearbook has its own distinct flavor, be it the psydelic covers of the s or the elegantly simple ones dating to the s.

Stanley "Bobby" Tagert, a supporter of women's right to vote, was hailed for his smarts and hair. But speaking of brains, he's right there. The end of one trouble was the beginning of another. On April 19, there was a conflict between the colonists and the British at Lexington, Massachusetts. Eight colonists were killed and ten wounded.

This was the first clash and started the Revolutionary War. The British then moved on toward Concord to destroy the military supplies, but were repelled by an army composed of farmers, merchants, business men, and mechanics.

Amazingly, this news traveled to Westmoreland County in less than a month. They would then be delivered to the militia officers. If this could be done in New England, they could do it here. This was their very own declaration of independence. Nicholas Alleman had shown his ability at leadership and was a part of this.

At the Campbell farm in Cook Township, Robert and his two brothers were the first to be captured in the family fields. The rest of the family was taken from their home, some of them killed before they ever got to the Indian camp. The rangers followed the trail to try a rescue, but were unsuccessful. Several years later, with prisoner exchanges and escapes, three from a family of eight were returned.

This was just the beginning. In the Iroquois Confederacy joined the British and entered the war against the Americans. Frederick Heinrich was at the grist mill when Indians surrounded his home with Mrs. Heinrich and their children inside. She went to the door to chase away what she thought was the family rooster. Instead an Indian scalped her in front of the children. One child escaped in the corn field; the Indians took the three remaining youngsters and burned their home.

They also killed two children at the nearby Haines homestead. The summer of was hot and wet, making for a good harvest. September turned cool, signaling the end of summer, so Magdalena busied herself preserving the produce from their vegetable garden.

It was time to put away the doily and fillet that covered her head during the hot months. Now she would wear the caps she had been knitting all summer. The next month it turned warm again.

It was almost like summer with a warm sun and clear skies. With the pioneers, it could not be enjoyed. Indians chose this time for one more attack before settling in for the winter. In fact, Magdalena thought, it was this kind of weather when her family was killed-the 8 th of October.

This Indian summer made her uneasy. One morning in late November the Allemans and their neighbors woke to find the ground covered with snow. Unlike the rain, it had fallen quietly. Nicholas took care of the livestock and brought in extra fuel for their fire.

Magdalena prepared some nourishing food. The children had great fun playing in the snow. They had managed with snow before, and it would soon clear up.

Magdalena found beauty in the patterns the falling snow made on the boughs of the evergreen trees which covered the hillsides. More importantly nothing could hide in the woods against the white ground. Wolves or a lurking Indian would be more easily spotted.

Though an inconvenience, the snow was somewhat welcomed. It turned out to be not one snow storm, but an ongoing series of dusting. There would be an occasional sunny day, but it was too cold to thaw.

As the snow piled up, Magdalena realized she had better start to ration their food supply. The snowfall continued for two months, and by February, travel was impossible. One positive ct was that the Indians who lingered in the area moved away, and that made planting their fields in the spring freer of trouble.

The Allemans, with determination and hard work, made a life for themselves in this relatively wild country. The children were able to continue an education. About two years before their arrival, a German Lutheran tear had established a school in the area where they had settled.

It was a one-room log structure with a greased paper window. This area was known as Hempfield Township. Magdalena maintained a frontier homestead helped by her growing children while Capt.

Virginia claimed it was their Augusta County. In the s Mason and Dixon solved the problem with their survey; and other agreements led to making this area Westmoreland County. This new county was about to experience some changes. As with wars since, the Revolutionary War caused a great migration, and in its aftermath, the easterners came west and the westerners went north. Another factor in the migration north was that in General Anthony Wayne forced the western Indian tribes into submission, opening up a new frontier for those who wanted more land and fewer neighbors.

The rivers-Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio-attracted settlers. Travel was more desirable by boat, and supplies became more readily available. A move to the north appealed to the Alleman family. Reports coming back told of the many streams that flow into the Allegheny River. An ideal place for a grist mill, thought Nicholas.

The grist mills in the area were few and far between. Pleasant Township. The five in Uniontown were just too far away for the farmers living in the north to take their crops. The decision was made to make the move. The men made their trip north and found land in Campbelltown in Buffalo Township. They purchased land from James Campbell. Thanks to General Wayne there was little concern about Indians. Their son, Jacob, bought property next to them.

Their friends, the Spanglers, had bought land in Sugar Creek Township. Friends and family would still be with them and they could start their own church. Once again the Alleman family was clearing land and building log cabins. The game was plentiful, and that fed them until their fields started to produce. Nicholas operated a grist mill as well as farming.

His mill on the stream was an improvement over the mills depending on horse-power. And it was so much easier for the settlers than the long journey to the mills in Westmoreland County. Neighbors gradually started to move to the area. Nicholas was beginning to feel what the rigors of colonial life had done to his body. That prompted him to make out his will. On September 6, he composed a will providing for all dear to him. He had the well-being of Magdalena foremost in his mind, as he had for the young lady who had been severely injured by the Indian attack so long ago.

She would receive 20 bushels of wheat and bran, ground and delivered by Jacob and he would also cut and haul firewood for his mother. Jacob would inherit the grist mill and 75 acres of land. Margaret, Barbara, Susanna, and the children of Magdalena, deceased, were willed equal portions of land. Elizabeth was only 13 at the time, but Nicholas was thinking ahead. She would receive most of the contents of their home as her dowry.

One month later, on October 6, Nicholas Alleman died at the age of 58 years. Magdalena was left with her two young daughters, and a great deal of property. She lived on for several more years among her children and grandchildren. She was now a woman in her 60s and would feel the effects of her injuries inflicted decades ago and the abuse of her body as she maintained a wilderness homestead.

She was lost for seven years. In she returned unharmed to grateful family and friends and related the incredible story of her life with the Lenni Lenape Indians near the Delaware Water Gap.

Apparently she was an astute pupil of the Indian healing arts, because her services in curing various ailments were in great demand.

She became a legendary figure as she rode on horseback from town to town with her herbs and natural medicines, ministering to the sick and wounded. In August of Col. This particular Schneider was a cousin though. I was born Snyder. We share DNA somehow!! Thank you for sharing this story with the world of the last Indian massacre in Lehigh County. Hi Randy Sue! I am so glad to hear this post meant something to you and your family. And I guess this makes us distant cousins. I never expected to find such detailed information on her life after the massacre. The reenactment took place on the same land where the original occurred, owned and farmed by Warren Frantz.

Warren showed me a parchment document from when Nicholas Marks, Eva, and Magdalena Schneider transferred the property to George Remelich. The property, with a large stone house built inwas then sold to John George and Heinrich Frantz in It has been in the Frantz family until recently.

He knew their location because his father never plowed the burial site as he considered it to be sacred ground. The farm has unfortunately been developed and the gravesites are now hard to locate and unmarked.

I do have photos of the placement of crosses that Warren put there for the reenactment, so the graves can still be located. I can assure you they have not been disturbed by development. I was inside and saw the utensils, plates, clothing and other artifacts from pre-massacre days that were discovered in the exposed ground floor.

Our reenactment took place on Sunday, October 10, before more than 1, spectators. Channel 6 from Philadelphia covered the event and had it on their evening news. One of the source materials I used for the History of the Egypt Reformed Church, spelled Schneider as Snyder, which I knew was wrong, so I put the correct spelling in parenthesis. Using familiar, present-day spellings, makes it difficult to follow a family line.
